Jolene In Quarantine

It’s a weird time to have a new business… our cafe is just a few months old and as you can see we’re a little late with social media posting. But we’ve hit one week of quarantine and now we’re seeing that this may go longer than two weeks. No one ever prepares for this kind of thing or even imagines it as a possibility. It reminds you that even with careful preparation you are still not fully in charge of your own destiny.

Last week it felt like an exaggeration but after a few days it hits you. Things will be a struggle after this. The world won’t go to ruins, but it will be tough for a while. We almost fully expect that we may not make it as a business. We’re not worried for ourselves personally but really people as a whole. We are young, healthy, even if we were to get sick we would survive and move on. Even if the business fails it would not be the end of our worlds. But being stuck with so much unknown makes you think a lot about why you do the things you do, have you made all the best decisions up until this point, does what you do even matter? We all need to do something to make a living, and even better if that something is beneficial somehow to somebody else.

They say you need to put on your own mask before you help somebody else but all the stores are sold out and we can’t help but feel useless, sitting here in an empty cafe, knowing that there must be something we can do. Everything is weighing on us but everything is weighing on everybody. Many of our clients and friends are in the healthcare industry and they are making our problems feel tiny and insignificant. They are frustrated with the things we are only hearing about in the news. As hard as it is for us their struggles put ours in perspective.

We’re going to keep cooking for those of you who want home-made meals, and we are doing next day delivery or pick-up in Barcelona. And for every meal we sell, we are donating one to the medical professionals working overtime right now. There is also an option to Donate a Meal (in addition to our own commitment). We are just going to continue to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Please stay in and stay safe, healthy and sane. #mequedoenelcafe
